Three Travelled Across the Pacific on an Environmental Mission

By Jai Cunningham

Together they travelled more than five thousand miles.

Roz savage rowed a boat from california to here, while Marcus Eriksen and Joel Paschal sailed a boat of junk.

The Brocade and the JUNK are now dry docked, on this day beside the Waikiki Aquarium.

The eco-sailors were aware of the issue of plastic marine debris, but maybe not to extent with which they encountered it.

"It was a pretty unique observation that we had been with these fish their whole life cycle. We had been through the same waters, as we were collecting our scientific samples of plastic, and we were picking up plastic. They too were picking up plastic," said Paschal.

"We filleted it to eat it, opened the stomach, and I was amazed to see plastic," said Eriksen.

"So in just five weeks of life, this one fish became this big and 14 rather large particles, pea size particles of plastic laden with pollution."

Marcus and Joel sailed this make shift junk raft from Long Beach to here to raise awareness about plastic trash polluting our oceans.

Roz Savage didn't use wind power, she used her muscles to make it from San Francisco to here in this row boat.

"I'd really like to think that people take that environmental message away from what I've done. That tiny little actions really can accumulate to create a very substantial change," said Savage.

She's talking about the one million strokes she estimates it took to row here.
So what little steps can we take to lessen the amount of plastic waste that ends up in our waters?

"First you can bring your own, bring your own cloth bag, your own coffee mug, you own bottle, stainless steel bottle," said Eriksen.

"Of course consumer choices is very important too, you should take your own bag to the grocery store. But it would be so much easier if the plastic bags weren't even allowed to be at the grocery store," said Paschal.

Still don't think YOU can make a difference on a world issue like this?

"And how did you make this big change in your life? And you know you can only ever start with the first action," said Savage.
