Halona Blowhole Reopens

By Manolo Morales

A popular scenic spot on Oahu has re-opened after being shut down for five months. The Halona Blowhole got a million-dollar renovation to improve safety.

Tourists from different parts of the world are once again flocking to the Halona blowhole.

Cameras were clicking away as visitors admired the natural beauty of the coastline on East Oahu.

"It's beautiful, it's absolutely magnificent. we have a blowhole similar to this in australia, but not with this kind of view," says Australian visitor, Melissa Lim.

The lookout over Halona blowhole was closed in april as it underwent some much needed repairs. The rock wall that served as a viewing platform had several cracks and was considered unsafe. it also made it easy for people to just climb over and put themselves in danger. some have died by getting too close.

A new stainless steel fence is designed to make the viewing safer and easier.

Eugene Lee who is from the City Department of Design says, "What was happening was the parents used to lift their kids up and sit them on the wall so they could view the blowhole. So the decision was to put in this type of wire fencing so that the kids could actually look through."

Another improvement is a new ramp to make it more accessible for the disabled. The city says the newly reconfigured parking lot is also safer for pedestrians and motorists.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann says, "We want to make sure that this very scenic coastline is always going to be as serene and as beautiful as it is Today and part of having this is to make sure that it is a safe experience."

The project was finished as scheduled, in time for the whale watching season, which is toward the end of the year.
