It's Official...Barack Obama is the Democratic Party Candidate

By Gina Mangieri

It's official -- Hawaii-born Barack Obama is the democratic party's candidate for President of the United States.

Our Gina Mangieri is in Denver and brings us this and the latest from the convention.

On Today's agenda, a vote for a possible next president, an appearance by a former president, and a potential vice president.

About a year and a half of campaigning came down to this moment -- the roll call vote for a presidential nominee.

"My fellow americans, my fellow democrats, land of aloha and love, birthplace of our next President of the United States proud to cast for our native son the following votes," says Senator Daniel Inouye.

Hawaii's youngest Delegate, Kari Luna says, "We proudly cast 26 votes for the next president of the United States, Senator Barack Obama, and one vote for Hillary Clinton."

The island delegation was thrilled.

Another member of the Hawaii Delegation, Chuck Freedman says, "We were part of draft Hawaii Obama and it was an improbably dream it's coming true now."

As for the one vote for Hillary Clinton, that came from delegate Richard Port.

"This may be the only time in my life that i will be able to cast a vote....United States."

Hillary Clinton released her pledged and loyal superdelegates to vote for Obama just hours before the vote. Clinton then called for Obama's nomination part-way thru the floor vote.

"And that I move senator Barack Obama of illinois be selected by this convention by acclamation as the nominee of the democratic party for president of the United States."

A few hours later her husband took to the stage with classic Bill Clinton pizzazz.

"Barrack Obama is ready to lead....in the world."

Our Mayor, Mufi Hannemann was also there to support Obama, "I think he came here tonight with a very strong message....pleasing to hear that from a great President."
