It's the First Day of School for the Little League World Champs

By Manolo Morales

It was back to school for some of the world champion little league players of Waipi'o. But as you might have guessed, this was not a typical school day.

For Pikai Winchester, his first day as a sixth grader at holy family catholic academy was a bit nerve-wracking.

"I saw all my classmates cheering."

Along with the cheerleaders, applause and rocky theme music, there were leis, lots and lots of leis. and through it all, Pikai had his little brother paliku by his side, who's battling cancer.

Pikai dedicated the world series to his younger brother. And the team was chanting Paliku's name right before the amazing come from behind win against Louisiana.

"It felt real good cause I can think about him when I'm up to bat."

Pikai's mother, Rena Winchester says, "That was the biggest aloha gift I could ask for from the Waipio family. i just broke down and they couldn't have done a more special thing for me and my family."

Day one at Saint Louis school for Kainoa Fong included an olympic medal type ceremony. Fong is a new student at St. Louis, but early indications are he'll have no problem making friends. fellow students were asking for his autograph.

"I knew some people already but Today, I made a lot of new friends, all because of the Little League World Series."

He has something in common with the older students. Four are members of the 2005 Ewa Beach team that also became world champions.
Kainoa did get a dose of reality though. He now has to catch up on three weeks of school work.

"I have to go tutoring ninth period and just keep working hard and try to come back."

After that six-run sixth inning against louisiana, this come back shouldn't be a problem.
