UH Football Travel to Florida

By Ron Mizutani

Gator football fans aren't the only ones gobbling up tickets to their season opener against the University of Hawaii. More than two-thousand warriors supporters will be in Gainesville for the August 30th match-up. Finding a travel package to Florida may prove to be as difficult as it was finding one to the Sugar Bowl.

The 2008 U-H football season is just three weeks away.

"The excitement is incredible its actually continued over from last year." said UH Associate Athletics Director John McNamara.

How much excitement? Well consider just about everywhere you turn, travel packages to Florida are sold out.

"That's a long way to go, but like i said which is why we created three packages one was get you there get you home another one was if you're going to go that far we'll hook you up with Disneyworld for five nights and those who wanted to make some money back we'll take them to Vegas make some money come home," said Kehau Amorin, Panda Travel's Special Projects Manager.

"We thought that when the game was announced as an afternoon game that the numbers would drop considerably but they continue to climb so that show you the passion of U-H fans," said McNamara.

Many fans locked in early on packages guaranteeing lower travel prices. But considering the distance, most are still shelling out more than two-thousand dollars each to get to Florida.

"We sold over 2,000 tickets out of our ticket block that we received from the University of Florida -- so there's going to be a number of U-H fans in attendance there - which is fantastic - this is the type of road following we haven't seen before."

In January, more than 15-thousand Hawaii fans made the long trip to New Orleans with thousands more driving there. It's that type of support that excites university officials.

"After the perfect season last year and then into the sugar bowl we saw so many uptrends in so many different areas -- in terms of merchandise in terms of season ticket sales really across the board," said McNamara.

"It's exciting - it's exciting to know that there's still hoard core U-H fans and we're going to whatever is possible to get them there," added Amorin.

The following week Hawaii is on the road again at Oregon State and travel packages are nearly sold out for that game as well.
