Family Claims HPD Protected Officer

By Andrew Pereira

STORY SUMMARY>>>

The family of a 73 year old woman killed more than two years ago after being struck by the car of an off-duty police officer claims HPD intentionally dropped the case.

Ok Name Lee was crossing Ala Moana Boulevard near Atkinson Drive at about 5:39 on the morning of October 29, 2005 when she was hit by a 1997 Chevrolet sport utility being driven by Lt. Bert Dement.

Lee's relatives filed a civil lawsuit against Dement and the city two years ago, but on Thursday demanded that the investigation into Dement's actions be reopened.

"If this officer had not been speeding he never would have reached the crosswalk and he clearly would have been able to stop," said Arthur Park, the Lee family's attorney.

In a statement to the media Honolulu Police Chief Boisse Correa wrote that Park allegations are "irresponsible and insulting to the integrity of the police department and the prosecutor’s office."

Correa went on to say that HPD "investigators go to great lengths to ensure that all investigations are thorough and fair. After closely examining the evidence, including the documents that Mr. Park provided, we have determined that there is no reason to pursue this investigation further."
