Deadline for Candidate Filing is Tommorrow

By Gina Mangieri

The deadline for candidates to file for this year's state election is tomorrow and a large field is still running unopposed.

Judging from the pace at the downtown elections office, you wouldn't think the filing deadline was imminent.

"We thought there would be a lot more people coming in, but even some of the candidates have been commenting that it's been really slow this year," said Donna Yamamoto.

A huge field of incumbents running unchallenged this year are: David Ige and Robert Bunda for State Senate.

On the house side, nearly three times as many unchallenged candidates as the last election, where they included candidates from every island, neighborhoods across oahu and both democrat and republican parties.

Republican incumbent Gordon Trimble's downtown senate seat is challenged by former democratic party chair Brickwood Galuteria.

"They do have a choice now -- and iIfeel as if my skills will render that particular position helpful, " said Galuteria.

Senator Paul Whalen is giving up his senate seat. Big Island representative Josh Green is eyeing that, and 4 candidates are vying for the house seat green is giving up.

Senator Lorraine Inouye is leaving the senate seat open to vie for the crowded Big Island mayoral race after Harry Kim steps down.

Former state chief labor negotiator Ted Hong will run for her Hilo senate spot against Dwight Takamine who is leaving the house for the race -- 10 people have pulled papers to run for Takamine's former seat.

Representative Tommy Waters won't run for reelection to his Windward house seat, but Quentin Kawananakoa has put his name in the hat.

Also a scramble on Kauai, where two councilmembers will run for mayor and 25 candidates took papers for the 7-member board.

Nearly a dozen pulled papers to run for Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann's re-election bid challengers include Panos Prevedorous.

"It is obviously David and Goliath, but not intellectually, only in the money sense. The incumbent of course is powerful, well known, he has big finances, but this is a people's campaign," Prevedorous said.

Congresswoman Mazie Hirono also making her re-election bid official. No major challenger so far but she still ready to run a million dollar campaign.

"600,000 people spread over several islands -- that's a lot, it takes a lot to communicate effectively with that kind of a diverse group," HIrono said.

County prosecutors are running unopposed so far for Honolulu, Maui and the Big Island.

Th filing deadline is 4:30 tomorrow afternoon.
