Hawaii's largest 4th of July fireworks show

By Marisa Yamane

Tens of thousands of people packed Ala Moana Beach Park tonight to get a good view of the state's largest Fourth of July fireworks show.

The fireworks show ended a little over an hour ago.

And as you can imagine it's been quite a traffic nightmare to get out of Ala Moana Beach Park.

Despite the traffic and the crowds, many folks say it's all worth it.

It's a tradition for many local families -- spend the day at Ala Moana Beach Park on the Fourth of July, swimming, playing in the sand, and of course, barbequing.

"Alright here's the chicken just threw these on with our friends and family help celebrating Fourth of July," said James Aquino of Kamehameha Heights.

The Aquino family has been coming here every Fourth of July for the past five years.

So has this group of friends, but this year was a little different for them.

"There's always been this small tree that was planted when we got here and slowly got bigger and bigger, no shade, but when we came this year, someone took our tree. We had to move a little, slight setback, but now we know we gotta come here a little earlier," said Reid Shimokawa of Kaneohe.

Earlier like the Aquinos.

"Got here yesterday morning, about 4," said Acquino.

While getting the perfect spot at the park can be a challenge, finding an open parking spot is another.

"We got here around three looking for parking. It took us 45 minutes and trying to get in here is ridiculous," said Allen Romero.

Some folks spent the evening across the street at Ala Moana Center, for a free concert, featuring top local entertainers like Willie K.

All leading up to this moment.

A nearly 20 minute fireworks show, sponsored by Ala Moana Center, one of the largest shows in the country on this Fourth of July.

"Happy Fourth of July!"

Not to put a damper on the festivities, but police did hand out a number of citations at Ala Moana Beach Park today -- mostly for alcohol and parking violations.
