Fourth of July Parade in Kailua

By Manolo Morales

A parade on July Fourth is about as American as the stars and stripes. And in Kailua, it's a tradition that many residents can't do without.

This is Kailua's 62nd annual Fourth of July Parade, and even those who aren't old enough, say they've seen every one of them. "We've come here ever since I can remember and if you come to the first one and you come to the one today, they haven't changed a bit," Kailua resident, Howie Wells said.

To be fair, it has gotten much bigger over the years. And clearly, there are some modern touches now. Kailua residents are proud to call this parade their own, so as spectators, they're very loyal.

Buster Hagelgansz and wife Toni Bushnell have been coming to this parade for 30 years and they say, "It's a really nice thing for Kailua, it's a really nice showing, everybody's you know, aloha spirit". Even their dog "pee" wouldn't miss the family tradition and she just got 15 stitches on her knee, "she's not supposed to be walking on it so we had to drive her here and drop her off and let her enjoy the parade," Bushnell said.

It's a parade with a small town feel, "It's about community, it's about friends enjoying no work, all play and eating good food with friends," Kailua resident Michelle Baginski said. And with the country celebrating the birth of the nation, it's about as All-American as you can get.
