Enforcing the Rules

By Tannya Joaquin

All day long, crowds have made their way to Ala Moana Beach Park.

A tradition for thousands.

Veterans have their spreads down to a science. Rookies are surprised by all the action.

Jon De La Cruz says, "His first time. He didn't believe it ever got this bad. I don't believe people come out this early. And when he was here at 4, he was like oh my gosh."

With a crowd up to 50,000 expected to catch the Ala Moana Center fireworks show, extra police are on hand to patrol the park.
"You see them all over the place where they should be. It was kind of humbug this morning for the parking, but it's always worth it," says Betty Avery.

Some Independence day revellers bend the rules. No alcohol or pets.

But for the most part, it's a day for family fun.

Romnick Pagurayn says, "Nobody's really doing anything. People's keeping it control. So far I just see lots of families around here that's all."

One rule that's being strictly enforced? Nobody's allowed near the fireworks.

It's Betty Avery's 10th year here and this one is extra special. "My daughter just graduated from military. We picked her up last night and she said I missed the beach. She was so excited she could come for the 4th of July. Fireworks and just family."

And, of course food.

But, the main attraction will light up the skies over Magic Island tonight-- the fireworks.

As of this afternoon, Honolulu Police tell us they've only issued one fireworks citation.
