Autopsy Results for Murder-Suicide Case

By Ron Mizutani

Autopsy results for a double-murder suicide have triggered more questions about Hawaii's latest domestic violence case. The city's medical examiner says Michael Anthony James strangled his wife and then drowned his son before hanging himself. Results also show both wife and son suffered blunt trauma to the head.

Friends are calling this a mystery with no answers. They say the crime doesn't fit the profile of a man who loved his wife and son. A single balloon and several flower bouquets sit in front of the family's two-story home on Mo'ohele Street.

"All the neighbors got together -- I heard last night they had a little prayer over here for the family," said neighbor Mark Arce. "He was always like playing basketball with the kid and riding bike. It's very strange that he did that."

Police believe 43-year-old insurance salesman Michael James killed his 39-year-old wife Grineline sometime over the weekend, then killed his seven-year-old son Michael Junior a few days later -- before hanging himself. Sources say a postal carrier found a note from Michael in his mailbox, which led police to the grisly discovery.

"We couldn't believe -- we didn't believe it in fact," said Arleen Domondon, Vice Principal of St. John's the Baptiste Catholic School, where Michael Junior recently completed the second grade. "By the end of the year he had awards for excellence in math, social studies and science. That was a big accomplishment and his mother was so happy and proud of that."

School officials say the family was extremely close.

"You name it every turn that we took in the school year -- we could count on them to be there," she said.

Grief counselors from Catholic Charities Hawaii will assist students and staff at St. Johns while the department of education will provide similar services at Farrington High School where Grineline taught english.

"They may be wrestling with feelings of helplessness, hopelessness depression, anger about the situation that's very hard to understand," said Claude McDowell, clinical psychologist of the Department of Education.

James received a disability discharge from the U.S. Army and did not have a criminal record.

"It's extremely difficult when we don't have any answers," said McDowell.

Friends say James was a big man who loved his wife and son.

"We knew them in a different way -- we knew them as being really loving and supportive and not even a shadow of anything wrong," said Domondon.
