Mailbox thief caught on tape

By Tannya Joaquin

A thief may have struck gold when he broke into hundreds of Makiki mailboxes. Many residents were expecting their tax stimulus checks, and now are concerned their money and identities could have been stolen.

Three different buildings on Kinau Street, hundreds of targets, and one mail thief on a mission.

"He's just going through and emptying out whatever," described Crimestopper's Spokesperson Kim Buffett. "Just grabbed everything and ran."

While residents were sleeping between 10:15 PM June 3rd and 5:45 AM June 4th, this man was caught on surveillance camera, breaking into 132 mailboxes. The Honolulu Police Department has seen its share of mail theft cases, but not like this.

"Not this big where they've gone into multiple buildings and basically pried open the mailboxes. We're talking about 15 from one place, 47 from another, 70 from another building," said Buffett.

Those 70 mailboxes were here at 1040 Kinau, where unlucky for the thief, there's 24 hour surveillance and a camera watching over the mail. The Postal Service is warning all residents to check their bank accounts and credit reports for any suspicious activity.

"That's the biggest concern of everybody. Not knowing what was in there," said Bob Miller, a Kinau Street resident.

Like these checks that may have been in the mail-- 6 hundred dollar tax stimulus checks expected this month.

"They're receiving their stimulus checks or even receiving their checks in the mail. Gone."

"Some people they had in mail check and credit card so we worry," said Kinau Street resident Janet Quach.

And, there's good reason to worry, with your mail, someone else could be off and running on a shopping spree on your dime.

"People's credit will be messed up for years to come with ID theft," said Buffett.

Crimestoppers is asking anyone who may know the man in the video to contact them. He's described as 5'8 and 180 pounds. Mail theft is a federal offense.
