Stroller Strides Helps Moms Exercise

By Manolo Morales

There's no question that regular exercise is good for the body and the mind.
In some cases, it might even help people become better parents.

It's called Stroller Strides, and having a baby is definitely an important part of the exercise. The idea is for new moms to get back into shape and still spend quality time with the little one.

"I don't have to go get a babysitter and he's right there with me in the stroller and watching me workout," said Karla Russell.

"She's our first child so I get to learn what other people go through 'cause parenting doesn't come easy. It's hard to raise a child, so just to get other ideas," said first time mom Miki Henriques.

Jennifer Nguyen owns the Stroller Strides franchise in Kailua and teaches class six times a week. Along with the workout, the class also serves as a support group for parents.

"I call it one stop shopping because in an hour, the moms get to see each other, the babies get to see their friends, and most of all the moms get a workout, because the last thing you want to do at the end of the day is leave your child to go to the gym," said Nguyen.

For this class, Windward Mall is the gym, and babies do a good job serving as free weights. The class has also been extra helpful for military wives.

"Some of the husbands are deployed so it's nice to talk to them about it and I know they need it too. It's good to have someone to talk to that's not a little baby," explained Russell.

"I just like it because I'm new to the island. I don't know anyone so I don't trust a lot of people with my child. So I can get a workout and I can bring my child with me," said military wife Jennifer Abraminko.

And one more thing, moms say teaching kids about exercise at an early age gets them started on the right path.

"She gets to understand what exercise is like and gets to run around with us. It's really great," said Kelley Fitzgerald.
