Local Obama supporters gather for rally

By Marisa Yamane

Dozens of local Barak Obama supporters gathered tonight at Ward Centre for a pau hana rally.

They celebrated today's milestone, reflected on their hard work, and looked towards the future -- knowing that the fight isn't over yet.

It has been a long journey for many of these hardcore Obama supporters -- a journey that just hit a milestone.

"As many of you know Senator Obama passed the majority of pledged delegates, and he is now on the verge of becoming the presumptive nominee for the Democratic nomination for President, and I think we should be really proud of that," said Andy Winer, Obama Hawaii State Director.

Pamela Nakagawa of Makiki has been riding the Obama wave for the past year and a half.

"When I heard Barak Obama and his message of change, it really impacted me," said Pamela Nakagawa.

It also changed Nakagawa.

Until a year and a half ago, she had never been involved -- or even interested in politics.

"I've never given a nickel to any other campaign," said Nakagawa.

But now Nakagawa is immersed in the grassroots effort.

"Got involved in everything -- got in his trolley got a sticker on my car, do his phone banks. I am very surprised at how far he got," said Nakagawa.

Her husband Ken Nakagawa also supports Obama.

"He's a Punahou man," said Ken Nakagawa.

A fellow Punahou alum, and a Republican since the days of Eisenhower, Ken Nakagawa became a Democrat this past February.

"So I could vote in the caucus," said Ken Nakagawa.

Among the others who showed up to this pau hana rally -- Obama's niece -- Suhaila Soetoro-Ng, here to support "Uncle Rocky," and a couple of Obama's former Punahou classmates.

"I didn't think he was going to run in 2008 and I didn't think he was going to be this far in 2008," said Tom Boyle, Obama's former classmate.

"It is a bit surreal," said Wayne Weightman, Obama's former classmate.

As for the Nakagawas, they're proud of this new milestone Obama hit, especially Pamela, knowing her hard work has paid off.

When asked if her friends are surprised at how involved she is, she replied, "I don't think anyone knows how involved I am. Now they do."

Hawaii's Democrats are now preparing for the State Democratic Convention, which will be held this weekend.
