Vog Puts Damper on the Honolulu Triathalon

By Tammy Mori

If you looked outside tonight, you might have thought it was New Years Eve.

There were no fireworks but thick vog continues to blanket the Hawaiian islands.

Participants in this weekend's Honolulu Triathlon worry it may cloud their performance.

The race is still on.

More than 1200 athletes are expected to compete.

But this year's weather conditions may mean a bigger uphill battle.

Eduardo Sa has been training year-round for nearly 20 years and in the times he's competed in the Honolulu Triathalon- he's never seen it look like this.

"This vog makes the air thicker and definitely heavier for breathing," says Sa.

A concern many of the participants have expressed.

"The air quality has given some people sore throats dry sinuses. Some people have said i'm actually not going to run the run course, i'm actually going to walk the run course," says Bill Burke, the Race Director.

Race officials worry the voggy and humid conditions will impact all the athletes performances.

"Like I say 1200 athletes that want to do well, and i'm not sure they're going to be able to do that with these conditions if they stay the same way on sunday morning," Burke adds.

But some remain positive- and say it could be worse.

"The conditions were terrible on the BIg Island. I didn't do any training while I was over there," says Adam Gana, a triathlete.

Experts beleive the vog may continue to build come Sunday.

But race officials say they'll be ready..

"We have 3 to 4 EMS units along the route and water stations along every mile," explains Burke.

And most participants welcome the challenge...

"Whatever happens we have to go and do the same race. Vog or no vog we go as fast as we can and see what happens," smiles Sa.

If you're up for the challenge, it's not too late to sign up.

Registration is open until tomorrow night at 6 p-m.

And a heads up to drivers, there will be some lane closures Sunday during the race.
