Obama, McCain Spar Over Foreign Policy

By KHON News

Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain are trading verbal blows over foreign policy.

McCain says Obama has been reckless to suggest he would hold talks with Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Obama accuses McCain of hypocrisy on his position on Hamas.

This was supposed to be his message of the day, John McCain the outdoorsman.

Then came a democratic accusation of hypocrisy on McCain’s position on Hamas.

Jamie Rubin, a Hillary Cclinton supporter released this interview he conducted with McCain two years ago in Davos, Switzerland.

“Sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another, and I understand why this administration and previous administrations had such antipathy towards Hamas…but it's a new reality in the Middle East,” said McCain.

Barack Obama seized on that, blasting McCain for attacking him, for wanting to sit down with the leader of Iran.

“He was actually guilty of the exact same thing that he is accusing me of. And in fact was saying maybe we need to deal with Hamas. That's the kind of hypocrisy we've been seeing in our foreign policy,” said Obama.

Riding on his bus, McCain insisted his position on Hamas has always been the same – no negotiation until they renounce wanting to destroying israel.

“Hamas would have to abandon their terrorist activities and their dedication to the extinction of the state of Israel. It was very clear then, it is very clear now,” said McCain.

Trying to back that up, the McCain camp points to this 2006 CNN interview conducted within days of Rubin's.

“Hopefully, that Hamas now that they are going to govern, will be motivated to renounce this commitment to the extinction of the state of Israel. Then we can do business again, we can resume aid, we can resume the peace process,” said McCain.

back on his bus, no sign of backing off on obama

“If he doesn't want to sit down with Hamas he shouldn't say he wants to sit down with their sponsor,” said Mccain.

Mccain is referring to that sponsor being Iran.

Obama said he is ready to challenge McCain on international relations in the general election campaign.
