Kaahanui sentenced to minimum 15 year prison term for cab shooting

By Jai Cunningham

Gregory Kaahunui, who had never been in trouble with the law before, was sentenced to a mandatory minimum 15 year prison term.

In July 2006, police investigated a shooting scene in a bank parking lot near Pearlridge Shopping Center. What made this crime unusual was the man who committed it.

"He had no prior record and then he started this crime spree. From burglarizing businesses and stealing a motorcycle, things of that mature. And then he robbed the cab driver, and shot him," said Deputy Prosecutor Franklin Pacarro.

"You did have a substance abuse problem. Then you engaged in an extreme uncharacteristic act, shooting another person," said Circuit Court Judge Karl Sakamoto.

Kaahanui's mother couldn't hold back tears at her son's sentencing. He might not have been guilty of robbery and assault charges if not for science lending a hand.

"It was the dna that linked him to the robbery and the shooting," said his mother Franklin Kaahanui.

Dna recovered at a burglary scene where kaahanui cut his hand on some glass. Judge sakamoto sentenced kaahanui to 30 years in prison, with a mandatory 15 year minimum. The judge had this advice.

"Because one day you will return to your community and you don't to make the same mistakes and spend the remainder of your life in prison. 11:20 You can see what drugs have done to you, if not for that you would have been a productive person," said Judge Sakamoto.
