Waimanalo Aunties on Patrol

By Brianne Randle

For over a decade, Margaret Pekelo and her posse have patrolled these shores.

"Make sure you watch your valuables and your things in it," she told a visitor.

They are the Waimanalo Senior Beach Patrol.

"Make sure you guys watch your valuables you know."

And thieves beware.

"We keep our eyes here and there and there," says Trudy Laa.

"We see a lot of things happening at the park that makes it very interesting you know," says Grace Adviento.

"Oh yeah, we do - a lot of pilferidge out of the cars, yeah they're very bold," says Rose Mizokawa

"You hate to see, hate to see it cause you live right across the street," says Pekelo.

This crew has caught dozens of thieves in the act. But vandals stopped them dead in their tracks.

"Usually this payphone here is broken," she points out. "They took the whole telephone off the wall and we couldn't find the box."

Twice - the ladies couldn't call police.

'No we couldn't use this phone cause it wasn't working at all no telephone around," Pekelo says.

No way to call for help. That's when help came to them.

Ten refurbished cell phones from area Represntative Tommy Waters. That dial straight to 9-1-1.

"In case of emergency."

Now phones in hand - the ladies are armed and ready.

"To the bad guys we're here to watch them."
