Clinton Wins West Virginia

By KHON News

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton won West Virginia's primary today, as expected.

She beat Barack Obama by a large margin, but the win is mostly symbolic as Obama leads Clinton in total delegates, a lead that is insurmountable in the five primaries remaining before the party officially nominates it's presidential candidate in August.

In the small state of West Virginia, Clinton captured almost every demographic group, doing well among the large group of white, working class voters in the state.

Less than four percent of the voters in the state are black.

Clinton's win prolongs the race and fuels her argument that she is able to carry groups that will be important to democrats in the general election.

But Obama has already started turning his campaign toward the general election.

"I am more determined than ever to carry on with this campaign," said Senator Hillary Clinton.

Hillary Clinton takes the stage in Charleston, West Virginia with what Fox news projects as the largest margin of victory in any primary so far.

"And I am so grateful for this overwhelming vote of confidence," said Clinton.

The Clinton camp hopes the win in the mountaineer state will pull them closer to Barack Obama in the popular vote.

But it will do little to close the gap between them in delegates.

There are only 28 delegates up for grabs in West Virginia.

Barack Obama conceded defeat in advance and spoke before polls closed during a campaign stop in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

"I'm not worried about the Democratic party being divided. And the reason is there's too much that unites us as Democrats,” said Senator Barack Obama.

Republican nominee John McCain toured North Bend, Washington.

It's part of his trip to outline his plan to tackle global warming.

"We will pass on to future generations of Americans a cleaner planet than the one we inherited. We can do that and America can lead, and not obstruct,” said Senator John McCain.

McCain campaigns the next two days in Ohio.

For the Democrats, they will compete in five more primary contests and continue to battle for the remaining superdelegates.
