Students and staff tested for T.B. at Farrington High school

By Manolo Morales

More than a hundred Farrington High School students were tested for tuberculosis Tuesday after being exposed to a student with the disease. Farrington is the third Oahu school in six months to go through the testing.

Many question why more precautions were not taken. Some students couldn't bear to look, but their real concern was why they had to go through this in the first place.

"How come the school system didn't catch this earlier because supposedly all students are supposed to take the test before they enter the school system?," said Chelsea Fujioka, a Farrington Senior.

Along with the students, five teachers were also exposed.

"I do worry because I have an elderly mother who's gonna be a hundred years old and I have a grandson who's gonna be four next month," said Farrington High School teacher Elsie Viloria McGrew.

Because TB has an 8 to 10 week incubation period, the student who had the disease did not test positive. This testing is past that period, but a similar situation could occur again.

"So what happens when another girl or anybody has it do they have to go through the same process again?," said Reva Manning, another student.

Kahuku High and Intermediate School went through this in February, Roosevelt High School in December. TB is a curable disease, but if it's left untreated it can damage the lungs and other parts of the body.

Students will have to come back on Thursday for the results but even if their skin test is positive it doesn't necessarily mean that they have the disease.

"They do have a false positive reading, sometimes one in several hundred skin tests,” said Julie Reyes, from the State Health Department.

A chest X-ray will determine if TB is actually present. School officials say the student who has TB has a mild case and is being treated.
