Mail Carriers Fight Hunger

By Marisa Yamane

It's the nation's largest one day effort to combat hunger -- thanks to many of you who participated in the US Postal Service's 16th annual food drive.
Adele Yoshikawa is on a mission.
"Thank you so much for the donation, whoa this is a lot thank you."
A mission to stamp out hunger.
It's a mission Yoshikawa and her fellow mail carriers don't take lightly.
"Not to brag but the Pearl City post office actually brings in the most from any post office."
All across the state and across the nation, mail carriers spent the day collecting bags filled with food.
"We have really been promoting the proteins because one of the things the food bank says they lack is the proteins so we have been seeing a lot of packs of vienna sausage and spam and trays of canned vegetables and of course we still see the rice."
One canned good can make a difference in a child's life.
A few more canned goods and a bag of rice can feed an entire family.
"There was a lady that just drove by a few minutes ago..she missed her carrier and she was so insistent to have the food delivered today that she actually drove by and dropped it off."
The food collected today will help sustain the local food banks throughout the summer.
"The quality of the food that we bring in is exceptional."
All in a day's work for Yoshikawa...to stamp out hunger.
