Dog Rescued from Burning Home

By Tammy Mori

Neighbors rushed to the rescue as flames engulfed a home in the Ainakoa subdivision of Waialae-Kahala.

The fire completely destroyed the house and displaced a father and his two kids who were renting the home.

It happened at about 9:30 last night near Kahala Mall, right off Kalanianaole highway.

Fire investigators believe the fire started on a bed in the front bedroom but they are not sure yet what ignited the blaze.

This is all that's left of a home on Aliikoa street.

The tragic scene will be forever singed in the minds of the family and neighbors who witnessed the destruction last night.

"I smelled smoke first and when I ran out I saw flames coming out of the front," says Jerel Okumura, a Neighbor.

The flames were dancing dangerously close to the house next door.

Neighbors grabbed garden hoses to keep the fire from spreading until firefighters got to the scene.

"The electrical lines, the flames were going towards the lines, so I was telling people that the lines might fall when I was shooting the house the thing started popping boom boom," describes Okumura.

The young girl who lived in the house..was the first to come home and find everything up in flames.

The only sign of hope was their pitbull "Rascal" that was rescued from the backyard.

"He was pretty hurting and when the homeowner came home he was kind of crying , holding the dog, calling the dogs name," he says.

Family friends say Rascal was taken to a vet clinic in Pearl City because he was bleeding out of the mouth and nose from smoke inhalation.

But friends and neighbors say this fire could have been worse.

And they're thankful it did not claim any lives.

The dog "Rascal" is listed in critical condition.

Friends say the man who lived in that house owns a cabinet shop in Kalihi, where he and his daughter will stay until they find other arrangements.

Friends don't believe the family had renters insurance.
