Summer Fun Sign Ups

By Tammy Mori

Hundreds across the island are staking out their spot in line to sign up for the popular Summer Fun program.

Registration is not until tomorrow morning.

But the 10,000 spots go fast.

Some dedicated parents at manoa valley district park have been in line since 2 this afternoon.

Summer Fun, sponsored by the City and County Parks and Rec, is one of the few programs that is both popular among kids and affordable for parents.

"My favorite parts are to make new friends and to learn activities that I never learned before," says Laulea Akana- Phillips, Third-grader.

And how can you say no to that.

Her dad, Kevin Phillips says for the past 7 years he has made sure they are one of the first in line for Summer Fun.

"I think it's good because they provide a real program and the kids just enjoy this. We have no problems coming down here and staying overnight," says Kevin Phillips.

And he comes prepared for the 19 hours of waiting.

"We brought our cot, just in case we get tired, we can sleep later on we need the munchies all the candies, some newspaper in case we get bored," he adds.

And he's not the only dedicated parent.

As the clock ticks closer to 9 a-m..the line grows longer.

They're all vying for one of 400 spots at this location.

"It's not just people from Manoa people come from all over oahu to be a part of this," says Stacey Kumagai, a Mother.

"The economy and everything people are trying to look for something more reasonable for summer school," she adds.

But more than anything they do this for their kids.

For that priceless smile...and for that moment when they realize they are worth waiting for.

"Thank you because he does alot for me, he really didn't need to do this if i didn't want to go to summer fun," says Laulea to her father.

Swim sign-ups are being held seperate this year, which is helping to ease the demand.

There is a $25 registration fee for summer fun.

And the activities like field trips can cost up to $75.
