Mokulele Airlines Bucks Trend

Private jets are becoming more common at Hawaii airports.
Bill Boyer, Mokulele Airlines President and CEO says, "Very popular there are at times in Kona, at our other base, this last winter there were 82 jets on the ground, private jets."
So officials with Mokulele Airlines broke ground on a new facility...a large hangar that will offer private jets a place to park and get serviced.
It may be another six months or so before we see the 14,000 square foot facility up and running, but at their nearly 26,000 square foot facility that's already built, it's a different story.
Mokulele is about to venture into uncharted waters. "This building is going to take care of freight. We have two cargo planes coming in within the next two weeks," says Mokulele Airlines investor, Dorvin Leis.
"Right now we have two caravan cargo freighters that are going to be here in about two and a half, three weeks, and we're going to do all the loading of the aircraft right here inside this hangar," says Boyer.
Boyer says the new Cargo Division of Mokulele Airlines could be up and running in 30 days.
Those new planes will be just like this Fed Ex plane.
Mokulele's growth comes at a time when major airlines are reporting massive losses.
So how is the small interisland carrier managing to expand.
Boyer says "It's just how well you manage your company and your debt structure. If you have a low debt on your aircraft and business model, then you're going to survive."
But while the company is growing, from five planes now to ten by the end of the year, it promises not to get carried away.
Leis says, "We want to stay in the niche we're in right now because we operate the most economical planes that are flying today."
Boyer says, "As fuel approaches 200 dollars a barrel. Yes it impacts us, but it doesn't impact us as the major carriers."
