Loyalty pays off in Las Vegas

By Manolo Morales

You don't have to be a celebrity in Las Vegas to get treated like one. Players who know the system well can get some high-priced ticket items "comped," meaning for free.

George Takishita has been to more than 500 casinos around the country and he gets a players card for every one of them. His message to those who don't.

"The person who don't get a player's card, they're losers!," said Takashita.

As many casinos that he's been to, he plays mostly where many Hawaii gamblers play, California Hotel, Main Street, and the Fremont. Among the comps he's received from playing in those casinos...

"First class roundtrip ticket to Las Vegas, things like that. It's not being a high roller or things like that, it's being loyal and the hours that you spend," said Takashita.

Takishita plays mostly at the tables while his wife plays the machines. And granted, they go to Las Vegas five or six times a year. But he says even someone who doesn't go as often and just plays five to ten dollars a hand can get something worthwhile. First of all, always use your players card so the casino can keep track of how you play. And in the four or five days of gambling, Takishita says the trick is to play in the same place.

"In the end maybe one trip, two trips, hey you might get over a hundred dollars," said Takashita.

Obviously, the bigger the bets, the better the comps. Takishita says by being a regular in one or two casinos, pit bosses and casino hosts will treat you better. As a regular and a preferred player at the Boyd Gaming Casinos, he's also been invited to some of the Mahalo parties thrown once a year in Waikiki, where great prizes are given away.
