Bishop Museum is using 21st Century Technology to make 19th Century History available to teachers.
It's a new website developed by Bishop Museum that can be found at hawaiialive.org.
"The site itself was made as a teacher resource. We decided that we didn't want to make it for any one specific grade so that teachers themselves could determine how they want to use it in the classroom," said Rona Rodenhurst, from the Bishop Museum.
It's described as an open ended educational tool kit. Some of the museum's valued artifacts, documents and treasures are pictured and described on the site. For example, Queen Liliuokalani's 1892 diary and more.
"This next piece is Kaahumanu's bible. It's one of two that we have here. And Kaahumanu, you know was the favorite wife of Kamehameha the First," said Rodenhurst.
The web site is divided into three "realms" - the first, Kai Akea, the ocean realm describing ancient voyages. The second is Wao Kanaka, the realm of man and the third is Wao Lani.
"So, in the third realm you'll find all of the things in reference to the Ali'i in there as well as our wonderful feather work because the birds are in the heavens, in the sky. And those are also symbolic for our Ali’i," said Rodenhurst.
The virtual items will provide a close-up look for students and teachers of Hawaiian history. The actual items are treated with tender care.
"I think that the museum itself is being a really good kahu, the curator, the caretaker of all of those things that are important to our Hawaiian people," said Rodenhurst.
While the website is designed for teachers and students, the fact is there are items in the museum collection that would be of interest to families. Here is a collection of essays written by students at Lahainaluna School in the 1840's, perhaps someone's ancestor.
"Even families who are far away from items here and their children want to do a paper on any of our items, they will have a resource," said Rodenhurst.
