Senior day care center hits roadblock

By Marisa Yamane

It's the only program of its kind on Oahu -- an elderly day care that also has a separate medical clinic.

But come July 1, 2008 the medical clinic at Maluhia will be discontinued.

This is devastating news to the elderly who go to day care at Maluhia, and their caretakers, who say it's a necessary service, especially at a time when more people are growing older and living longer.

"I'm going to be 85, ha ha ha, old lady," said Sally Masamune of Ewa Beach.

Sally Masamune loves coming here to Maluhia in Kalihi for their adult day care program.

It's also very convenient for her granddaughter, who happens to be her caretaker.

"Everything is in one area, one facility, and that made a big difference in our lives, both grandmother's health and our family's life," said Crystal van Beelen, Masamune's granddaughter.

"Everyone has been so good to me from the beginning. I was very weak when I first came," said Masamune.

Unlike other adult day care programs on Oahu, the one at Maluhia also has a separate health clinic with a full-time geriatric physician.

"No stress, everything is inclusive. So while I dropped her off here I knew she was in the best care, people taking care of her, if there was any problems they were right here on the premises," said van Beelen.

But on Wednesday, Masamune found out, come July 1st, Maluhia will no longer have a physician on staff.

"Ever since this news I've been kind of depressed," said Masamune.

Hawaii Health Systems Corporation runs the state-owned Maluhia.

Chief Executive Officer Vince Lee says they were forced to discontinue the clinic at Maluhia because of finances.

"The whole health system is short $25.4 million. What it represents is the shortfall from what we're being reimbursed and for what our cost is to provide that service," said Vince Lee, Hawaii Health Systems Corp. CEO.

Hawaii Health Systems is now focusing on its core services -- which include nursing home care and adult day care services.

Masamune and 65 other elderly people who use the clinic's services will now have to find another primary care physician.

"I feel sorry for the others too. They have to start looking for doctors and they're so old, older than I am, they have no one to turn to at least i have my granddaughter to talk to and give me advice," said Masamune.

Hawaii Health Systems will try to help them find a new doctor.

"I share their concerns and ask for their patience and ask them to work with us," said Lee.

Hawaii Health Systems will also discontinue its home care services on July 1st, but will help to find new home care for those 32 people.
