Aging can be difficult both physically and mentally, but there's a new treatment out there to help us as we age.
Some experts say the treatment has worked wonders for the patients and their caregivers.
These seven seniors at Hale Nani are receiving Namaste treatment. Developed by a nurse in Florida, it is now practiced here. Hale Nani director John Megara credits the staff with embracing the treatment.
"They were the people that made the assessment. It wasn't management that was seeing it. And there was a stirring of excitement, that there was change, that there was a benefit to what they were doing," Megara says.
Touch is one part of the therapy.
"I think what it is, is by doing the touch a person that's not cognitive, that doesn't have those senses any more, realizes that we know that there's someone in there," Megara says.
Staff members have seen first hand the results that happen with the Namaste treatment.
"Yes - they started to talk, they started to say something like thank you whenever we do this care, foot massage, hand massage, aroma therapy and stimulate their different senses. And at the end of the day, the end of the therapy, at the end of the Namaste therapy, they say thank you and they look forward to coming back to the room," Nicetas Lingson of Hale Nani.
Many of these patients will remain here - but some may go home. Families are taught the techniques.
"Families come and they see them in his condition and they're heart-broken. They don't know what to do. We can teach them how to do some of this Namaste, some of these Namaste techniques. Then it's not that they're coming here and wasting their time staring at mom or dad or grandma or grandpa. What it is, is that they're actually contributing," Megara says.
