Support groups for birth mothers and fathers are available through various agencies. Ask your adoption agent or attorney about the type of local support services available, and find out if support will be offered both before and after the adoption. You may also want to know if the service will put you in touch with other people who are going through the same experience. If you decide you wish to attend such a support group, you may meet others who have already placed their children for adoption, and you can ask them what their experience has been. After the adoption, you may benefit from talking to others who are also coping. You may learn new skills that will help you in planning for the future. Although you may not feel you have an immediate need for such a group, many women wish to discuss their adoption decision at some point. Therefore, it is important that you choose an adoption resource that offers follow-up services for individuals and groups. For additional information, consult an adoption agency.
