It's not a good idea to use soft water for house plants. Here's why: water that has been softened contains sodium salts, which are harmful to many plants. Nor should soft water be used for outdoor watering. After the water evaporates, it leaves behind a sodium residue, that may impair plant growth. It's especially hard on the lawn; and even ordinary table salt will kill most types of grass. Make sure you have a separate or bypass line that supplies regular, untreated water to all outdoor spigots. If indoor water is softened, just draw your water from these outdoor faucets, when watering plants inside the house. For more information about watering plants, consult your local water department, garden store, or a dealer who specializes in water treatment devices.
