Supergeeks: To Buy or Not to Buy

A viewer asks, “What is your opinion of the best 'out of the box' computer?”

Avoid the lesser known manufacturers. They lack after-sales support and typically go out of business.

Keep in mind you will get what you pay for. The bargain computers are designed to last about a year. We call them ‘disposables.’ The cheaper computers usually have only minimal performance specifications, so don’t expect much if you go cheap.

E-machines don’t have a good track record. Try to avoid systems with Maxtor hard drives, too. Those drives tend to die more often than other drives.
.
If you want a computer custom built to your specification, Dell has the best selection and price range.

New PC computers will probably come with the Vista Operating system, which is still new and has a lot of issues with older software/hardware. The support groups of many manufacturers are still learning the intricacies Vista. Some problems with Vista don’t have solutions yet. It’s best to let Windows Vista mature for about a year or so before jumping in.

Apple offers some great iMacs. If you’re unfamiliar with Apple, you will have to learn how to use one. Apple’s operating is a bit different than Window but it is user friendly. Most off the shelf software probably will not work on the Mac OS. However, Apple usually has some alternative that can provide the same function.

One of the big benefits of the Mac is you don’t have to worry about viruses and spyware infecting your computer. The downside is MACs usually cost more than PCs. Out of warranty replacement parts are also expensive. If you go Mac, be sure to get the extended warranty (Apple Care).

I hope this helps in your buying decision. If you would like us to service or maintain your computer in the future, please feel free to bring it down to any one of our three locations (http://supergeeks.net/contact/) or just call us at 808-942-0773 for onsite or over-the-phone support. Thanks!
