SuperGeeks: Scam du Jour

By James Kerr

The bad guys are always looking for a new angle.

The latest scam to hit the islands is a fax from the “Department of Transportation”. The fax requests an update regarding your company’s file and along the way tries to capture confidential information about your company’s banking.

This particular con is actually quite effective since it’s not uncommon for your company’s administrative staff to supply info about your company – especially when it’s government business.

A closer look at the fax, though, reveals some things which just aren’t right:

No contact phone number.
No fax header (typically found at the top of the page, specifying sender’s fax and time/date stamp)
The logo doesn’t seem “government”
Vendors don’t require bank account signatures…unless they are planning to print counterfeit checks in your company’s name!
