Supergeeks: following through on new year's resolutions.

By Robyn Nishi

The Problem:
We are only a month into the new year and it already feels like the recent holiday season was years ago.

So what happened over the last four weeks? And where did our big and audacious new year’s resolutions go? Completing our resolutions now seems about as likely as that missing sock knocking on the front door and triumphantly reuniting with its long lost twin…

John Hancock Field said, "All worthwhile men have good thoughts, good ideas, and good intentions, but precious few of them ever translate those into action."

The Solution:
Hope is not all lost. It’s not too late to get started on those resolutions. All you need a little bit of technology to get you excited again.

If you are like me, your resolutions include at least a few mentions about fitness and finances. Lose 10 lbs. Save 10% of your income. It’s common.

But if we pursue these goals with only common vigor, then we can expect only common results, which are not much. What we need is focus and the unremitting drive to fill Kipling’s unforgiving minute with sixty seconds worth of distance run!

To reach any goal, you need to do a few things:
1. Write it down. If it’s not on paper it doesn’t exist.
2. Identify the habit or behavior which will help you achieve that goal. Old habits won’t bring new results.
3. Document everything. If you can benchmark success, it’s not success.
4. Have someone hold you accountable. It significantly improves the results.

You also need Google Calendar: www.calendar.google.com

It is an online calendar. It’s free, easy to use, and perfect for achieving your resolutions.

Here’s what you have to do:
1. If you don’t have a Gmail account, get one here: www.gmail.com. It’s free. And it’s good.
2. Go to www.Calendar.Google.com and sign up. It takes less than 30 seconds to get going.
3. Now start scheduling the things you need to do in order to reach your goals.
4. Day by day, document what you did which directly impacts your reaching those goals. It’s very helpful to see retroactively whether you actually spent your time working toward your goals.
5. Share your calendar with friends and family. Ask them to hold you accountable.
6. See if you’re reaching your goals.

Be like Abraham Lincoln who said, "I will get ready and then perhaps my chance will come." Use simple and free technology like Google Calendar to get ready and to realize your chance. It’s yours for the taking!
