Lokahi Ships School Supplies to Molokai

By Tannya Joaquin

Our Lokahi Giving Project made the commitment this year to provide Molokai students with school supplies, and we pulled it off with last minute help.

The boxes are filled with precious cargo for 1,500 Molokai students.

School supplies, bought with aloha by Lokahi so no child on the Friendly Isle goes without this year.

Molokai Lokahi Coordinator Gina Luuloa flew in to help sort and ship the goods.

"It's a little different for me because it's personal" says Luuloa. "I was born and raised there. I know what it is not to have the availability."

Gina worked with six schools to get their most needed items, such as composition books, binders, pencils, and glue.

Basics taken for granted by most, but too expensive for Molokai families with few jobs to be had, and gas over 5 dollars a gallon.

"The needs are very extreme" says Luuloa. "One of the schools they're packing for right now is Maunaloa. That school was affected directly by the closing of Molokai Ranch so we're looking at 56 kids being touched by school supplies."

Filling the needs of Molokai students is Lokahi at its best-- coming together for the community.

Fisher Hawaii and Walmart gave us price breaks on school supplies and helped pack them up.

JN Automotive Group donated use of a van today to pick up the supplies, Hawaiian Airlines comped Gina's ticket and Island Air is shipping everything to Molokai for free.

Lokahi welcomes donations of any amount to help meet needs in the community. You can contribute online by clicking here.
