Community shows "Aloha for Aloha"

By Dana Lyons

The community can show its’ Aloha spirit for thousands who lost their jobs. Khon2’s Lokahi Giving Project is proud to be part of "Aloha for Aloha", a block party to raise money for employees who need emergency medical assistance.

Former Aloha airline employees, who gathered for their emotional final flight one month ago, will reunite for a Friday night fundraiser in downtown Honolulu.

“The community has been so supportive for all our Aloha employees, but we do have a number of employees who have more pressing matters as far as medical bills. Rod Nakabayashi, somebody has to go to dialysis. It costs him 15 hundred a day,” said Kevin Velasco, a former Aloha Employee.

The "Aloha for Aloha" block party will raise money for employees like Rod who need emergency medical assistance. It will be at Murphy's Bar and Grill, on the corner of Nuuanu and Merchant Streets from 6 to 10 PM.

“Raise money to get into the fund that will help the families. The other one is to create an awareness of the problems and probably as much as anything, getting all the Aloha employees down here, participating and helping and showing people that they miss them,” said Murphy’s Bar & Grill owner Don Murphy, another participant of Aloha for Aloha.

Top Island entertainers will be there too. Willie K, Kaukahi, Touch of Gold, and Mana'o Company. Businesses chipped in by donating food and drinks-- all block party proceeds will go to those with emergency medical needs. Some good samaritans have pledged to match all money raised-- up to 50-thousand dollars!

If you can't make the block party, you can still help out by making a donation to our 'Lokahi for Aloha' fund at lokahigivingproject.com.
