Honolulu boy born without ears

By Tannya Joaquin

A Honolulu boy born without ears may finally get his wish. But, the surgeries are expensive, and his family is paying for them, with no help from insurance.

4 year old Nicholas Soma has a smile that will melt your heart and a spirit to match.

Nicolas says he like golf and, “I like opening presents!,” laughs the 4 year old. There's one present he wants more than anything else.

“When we had Taylor, the first thing he looked at was her ears. He said Mommy she has big ears. Now, he's starting to ask, why is mine smaller?,” said his mother, Nancy Soma.

Nikko was diagnosed at birth with Bilateral Atresia and Microsia, or misshapen external ears and lack of functional inner ears.

“For a child to have both sides affected like Nicholas is about 1 in 100-thousand,” said Lance Soma, his father.

He wears a headband equipped with a hearing aid. Stanford surgeons are working to give Nikko the gift of hearing, by making ears with material called medpour, one at a time.

“They open up the ear canal and then they create the outside,” said Nancy.

His first surgery went well.

“It's not hurt,” said Nikko.

“They told us it's going to cost us 150-thousand dollars. That's out of our pocket. That's just the surgery,” said Nancy.

“As of right now, we haven't gotten any help from our insurance. We're doing a lot of fundraising to help out with some of the costs,” said his father.

Fab Four singer Brandon Kahele has organized a benefit concert for Nikko this Saturday.

“Despite his disadvantage, he's a normal child. He runs around and plays like every other kid. I think the cutest is when he asks how come I don't have any ears. What do you tell a 4 year old?,” said Brandon Kahele, from the Fab 4.

Doctors don't know if the first surgery was a success yet, but his family already sees a change.

Before, Nikko often covered up his ears and now?
“He walked into the classroom just flaunting his ears like I've got something,” said Erma Soma, his grandmother.

Nikko can't wait for his second surgery in June.

“They're going to fix me a nice ear.”

Saturday's concert is from 3 to 8 p.m. at Rumors and also benefits Wells of Hope.
