Art-Conservation Partnership

Amidst the high-rises of downtown Honolulu, an urbanite artist whose taken to a bicycle and fruit-picker to create his art.

Mat Kubo says, "This project I have is called action fun urban survivalism, it just has me just surviving on what I can hunt or gather, collect, gleen or grow in my own yard so I've been on bike and going around Honolulu and finding different people to trade with."

Eco-Logic is the exhibit at Arts at Marks Garage where you'll find Kubo's photos, recordings and tools of his artistic bartering.

"I've been eating pretty good actually, the first week was rough, I only ate papayas and mangoes because those were the easiest things to find so I lost a lot of weight as it got further I met more people, I met some fishermen so I got some good fish and I gave them some of my papaya and mountain apples," says Kubo.

Arts at Marks Garage Creative Director, Rich Richardson says, "We've given a bunch of artists three months to make a piece of artwork about their opinions, views of the environment."

A variety of artwork from 22 artists statewide and a few from the mainland.

"And we're not expecting a bunch of pretty pictures and we're not expecting a bunch of doomsday material but somewhere in between," says Richardson.

"The arts serve as a platform to explore science, what can be sort of complicated for some people, even in terms of understanding a terminology like sustainability," says Marla Musick of the Hawaii Arts Alliance.

For Mat Kubo it's not the food but the relationships built that hold the greatest impact.

"What I found was old hawaii people had, if you had a bunch of bananas you gave to your neighbors and your neighbors gave to you, it wasn't so much a trade it was sharing and giving and 10:10 I think that's an issue of sustainability that we need to talk about.">

Eco-Logic at Arts at Marks opens July 29th.
