City offers rebate for use of low flush toilets

By Kathy Muneno

A City rebate program meant to conserve thousands of gallons of water every year was suppose to expire at the end of the month. But two agencies are stepping in to make sure its extended.

With one flush, you could be sending 3 to 5 gallons of water down the drain, unless your toilet is low flow.

Low flow, or high efficiency toilets use only 1.28 to 1.6 gallons of water per flush. On a yearly basis, an old toilet will use more than 32,000 gallons of water, low flow, as little more than 7,000 gallons of water and at the bathroom store they say low flow isn't what it used to be.

"A lot of people are still afraid of the low flow toilets. But once they come to this store and we show how well the low flow toilet and even the high efficient toilet flushes they feel very comfortable about changing their toilets to a low flow toilet," said Ryoko Mizyshima, a bathroom store employee.

To demonstrate she put 12 heavy marbles in the low flow toilets.

"And it's a quick flush and it got rid of everything," she said.

"They increased the size of the hole, they changed tHe height of the bowl itself, they did all those things because they found they were having problems with it and so today those problems shouldn't exist," said Su Shin from the Board of Water Supply.

The City almost put a lid on a $100 rebate for each low flow toilet installed by a licensed plumber.

"But both the city's environmental services department as well as the board of water supply feel like it's a really important program to not only save water but you know reduce flow into the sewer system and so we've both made a commitment to continue to fund the program beyond that sunset period," said Shin.

The program will continue annually beyond the scheduled June 30th expiration, provided funding is available. Go to the board of water supply website or to a bathroom store and it'll install it and do the paperwork for you.
