Elderhood: Preventing Chronic Disease

Elderhood: Preventing Chronic Disease

Experts recommend we should all exercise in an effort to slow down the progress of aging.

But sooner or later, we all fall victim to the pains and diseases of old age. Here in Hawaii, there is something called the Chronic Disease Self management program.

Cristina Vocalan from the State Department of Health says, "Overall, it's a workshop that's made available to chronic diseases so that they can better manage their symptoms and cope and live a day to day life with a chronic disease."

The program is not merely for seniors but for their caregivers as well. And it's not just about taking more medication.

"Action planning or symptom management so if their is pain involved or limitations then you would make weekly actionable goals and so that's part of the process and part of what's covered in this workshop."

During the six week course, caregivers may learn something about their own wellness.

"You know, many of us don't realize that we may have ongoing health conditions and you might be very focused on caring for a loved one with a chronic condition."

That's why Vocalan says it's advisable for caregivers to take advantage of the program, too.

"Not only do you find better ways to help your loved manage their condition but you also learn a lot from this program and incorporate it into your life."

The self-management program is not meant as a substitute for professional health care, but as a supplement.

Leslie Tanoue of Alu Like says, "Working more efficiently or effectively as a partner with your health care provider so not just handing over all the power but being an active participant in the road for your own wellness and health."
