Seniors get ready for AlohaCare's Summer Blast

By Kirk Matthews

AlohaCare’s Summer Blast is aimed at hundreds of Hawaii seniors.

"Last year as we will this year, we had Korean brush painting, we had opportunities for people to pot plants, we had some dance groups - both traditional Korean dance groups as well as some sort rock n roller seniors from Kokua Kalihi Valley Health center and it was a really good time," said John McComas, from AlohaCare.

The event will be held Wednesday June 18th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at McCoy Pavilion in Ala Moana Beach Park, with a free lunch provided at 11 a.m.

"It's for AlohaCare members in our advantage plans - but also it's open to other medicare members and to their friends and to their family," said McComas.

McComas told us this event has become increasingly popular with some seniors arriving downtown the night before so they could get an early start on the morning activities. He emphasized the social and cultural aspects of the Summer Blast.

"Again, it's an opportunity to share each other's culture, to meet and make new friends, to engage in different activities. And this year, in fact we're adding some health screening opportunities so we'll be doing that," said McComas.

AlohaCare is based in Hawaii and serves clients all over the state. It is a non-profit health care organization.

"We serve the QUEST patients, and we serve medicare patients. Our primary mission is to serve under-served individuals in the state of Hawaii and to serve poor people and to serve medically fragile populations," said McComas.
