Guardian Service helps with seniors manage assets

By Kirk Matthews

Seniors are living longer and that means their nest egg must last, too. In the Elderhood Project, we learn about an organization that may help in that regard.

Money - it may never be more important than when we are older. Many seniors have worked hard all their lives and have plans for their retirement. Making sure those plans become reality is part of the work of CSI Hawaii.

"That's what CSI's all about, by safeguarding assets, providing a secure and comfortable environment, knowing that someone is knowledgeable, trustworthy to handle the finances," said Karena Yee, from CSI Hawaii.

CSI stands for Comfort, Security and Independence. But managing assets is just one of the things CSI does. The organization is often called on by state agencies.

"There are many, many situations that - many for example are seniors that become incapacitated, had no family and the court has to step in. Or they have situations where there are disagreements among the family," said Yee.

Siblings may not agree on how mom and dad should save, invest or spend. CSI Hawaii is a non-profit agency that charges a fee - - often on a sliding scale - - for its services. It may help with financial management, bill-paying, record keeping, health insurance filing. Or, if there are no family members present, may be appointed guardian.

"When it comes to money, and large assets or sometimes even without assets in the case of just a guardianship, who's going to make those very critical decisions for mom and dad?," said Yee.

CSI is not an investment service but often works with investment houses.

"Typically, if a client, if they hold large assets, they already have brokerage firms and our job is really almost the fiduciary duties, to making someone's keeping an eye on them," said Yee.
