Seniors are often cared for by family members, all of them living in the same home. But what happens when the family members have to go to work.

Seniors at Pearl City Hale are involved in a variety of activities. They all live at home with their families. But those family members, sons and daughters, have to go to work during the day.
That's where the adult day center comes in.

"How can you possibly concentrate on work when Grandma is at home alone? This way they know Grandma is happy, she's well cared for, has a breakfast with us, a hot lunch, a snack and you don't have to worry about it," said Rosanna Evers, the Adult Day Center Operator.

Rosanna Evers has operated adult day centers for more than twenty years. The Pearl City center has about 40 clients and while not all will be here all day every day, the center is open all week long.

"Our center in Pearl City as an example is open seven days a week including holidays. Our thinking is that - of course, there are day centers that are open five days a week - but on Saturday, maybe you want to take care of shopping or errands. So it really helps families to have a little more options," said Evers.

When the seniors come to the day center, they can be involved in a number of different endeavors. These ladies are working on individual quilts.

"There's activities such as arts and crafts, outings and at our Pearl City location, it's actually pretty interesting because we have a table where they have an ongoing game of 21, all day long," said Evers.

But there's no gambling with staff. Evers knows exactly the type of certified nurses aide she's looking for and those are the ones she hires.

"They're so - right there. It's very personal, it's very real. It's not a situation of where I'm the worker and you're the client. They just engage so well and those are the kinds of folks that we like," said Evers.
