Aging in place

By Kirk Matthews

There is a concept in senior care called "aging in place."

In a way, it's a reference to what was commonly accepted for years, seniors living out their years in their own homes.

Nursing homes have become the norm, but that can't continue.

Audrey Suga-Nakagawa of the Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society says, "Well, you know there's going to be 78 million baby boomers who are going to be turning 65 over the next twenty years. And we just don't have just don't have the institutional type settings to provide that kind of continuous 24 hour care."

Even if many more senior living centers like Arcadia were built, there still wouldn't be enough room for that many elders. That's why "aging in place" is getting more attention these days.

In order to accomplish that, some changes may have to be made.

"I think, first of all your environment - retro-fitting it, making it much more accessible for the person so that they can be safe at home and prevent the type of injuries that may occur, that you commonly see among an elder person," says Suga-Nakagawa.

Another area of concentration for aging in place - prevention.

Suga-Nakagawa says, "Like lifestyle changes, exercise, good nutrition and staying engaged socially with your community, having a really good support system, really helps promote successful aging."

This Saturday, the Hawaii Pacific Gerontological Society will sponsor a free aging in place workshop at the Ala Moana hotel starting at nine in the morning. Among other topics, how to pay for long term care.

Suga-Nakagawa says, "Whether it's through long term care insurance or reverse mortgage or estate planning. We're also going to be promoting the public programs that we have at the state and county level and some of the housing options and in-home support services."
