Action Line

Kinau Street Traffic

By Jai Cunningham

It's one of the heavier travelled streets in Honolulu.

A group of homeowners whose driveway leads to Kinau street says there is a danger lurking along the busy street.

In an action line exclusive the homeowners and city disagree about how dangerous the situation really is.

Patricia Paakaula is sometimes afraid to leave home.

"I go down there with my stomach churning, thinking oh please god, let there be a space."

Four parking spaces to be exact, and that can be a problem, not just for Paakaula but others as well.

Another Kinau street resident, Dorothy Kaneda says, "Very hard to get out, and it takes a while. We make sure we have to sort of sneak out, slowly. And sometimes people give us a chance to come out."

And that has led these neighbors to come up with some interesting ways to get onto Kinau safely.

The same is said for another Kinau resident, George C. Gouveia,"My wife got out there twice. Tried to stop the cars, waved her hands to stop the cars. I yelled at her to get off the road before somebody hits you."

"Fortunately my mailman was across the street. So, I called to him, just asked him tell me when it's safe? And he went out and he held his hand up like that."

Mrs. Paakaula's proposed solution, it's not a radical one, she's not talking about banning parking along this very busy Makiki street. No, Mrs. Paakaula's solution is a very simple one.

"Just takes away one of those spots. I'm not asking for the whole four of them, but if they would just give us a little more space there."

The city says it has looked the situation over and ruled it's not a danger so the parking stalls stay.

Mrs. Paakaula disagrees, she's had two accidents over the past year, including one last week.

Officials have offered Mrs. Paakaula an option.

"A petition signed by everybody who lives in Kinau street between Victoria and Pensacola, on both sides of the street. Then they could consider this. Well this is kind of impossible as far as I was concerned."

Paakaula has enlisted the help of state legislators, hoping city officials will have a change of heart.
