On Friday morning, the Russian President is expected to arrive.
And then late Friday night -- President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.
RUssian President Dmitri Medvedev is expected to arrive at Hickam Air Force base Friday morning.
Then from approximately 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., major roads including Nimitz or the H-1 Freeway will be closed in the townbound direction between the base past the Honolulu Airport and Waikiki.
More traffic jams are expected as Waikiki checkpoints get set up at Ala Moana Boulevard and at Lewers Street. These are both for pedestrians and drivers seeking access to the secure zones around the Hale Koa, Fort DeRussy, Hilton Hawaiian Village.
Then late Friday night around 10:35 p.m., President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama arrive, and once again the route to Waikiki will be shut down for their transit.
The first freeway closure of APEC week took place Thursday morning with the arrival of Chinese President Hu Jintao.
And that meant traffic jams from the airport area all the way to Waikiki.
The Chinese president arrived in Honolulu just after 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
Shortly after that, Honolulu police secured the H-1 Freeway by shutting down the onramps from the Airport Viaduct all the way to Waikiki.
The city is asking residents for patience and cooperation, especially as the major APEC events take place this weekend.
Most of the buses going through Waikiki will also be rerouted starting Friday, November 11.
City Press Release:The Department of Transportation Services is alerting the public that APEC-related closures of Kapiolani Boulevard between Atkinson Drive and Kalakaua Avenue and Atkinson Drive between Kona Street and Kapiolani Boulevard will continue on Friday, November 11, 2011. Accordingly, TheBus routes 3, 9, and A will continue to be detoured.
Security measures will be implemented on Ala Moana Boulevard, Koko Head of Atkinson Drive from 5 a.m. on Friday, November 11, 2011. This will require implementation of the weekend bus detours involving TheBus routes 8, 19, 20, 42, E, 23, 24, 201, 202, and 203.
Routes 19, 20, 42, and E will terminate at Ala Moana Center instead of entering Waikiki. Routes 23 and 24 will terminate in Waikiki instead of continuing to Ala Moana Center. Route 8 will continue to connect Ala Moana Center and Waikiki except it will use Kalakaua Avenue to do so instead of Ala Moana Boulevard.
All passengers on routes 19, 20, 42, and E will need to transfer to route 8 to complete their trip to Waikiki. Passengers on routes 23 and 24 whose destination is Ala Moana Center will also need to transfer to route 8 to complete their trip.
Routes 201, 202, and 203 will be rerouted to enter Waikiki via Kapahulu.
