There's a "city of Honolulu" and a "city of APEC."That's how officials are describing what will happen in just over two weeks when 21 world leaders will gather for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
The U.S. Secret Service released a list of upcoming closures.
That will affect boaters and surfers, some air traffic, and most of all vehicle traffic around Waikiki and in Ko Olina.
While officials say Waikiki will remain open for business they also suggest APEC week isn't the best time to head that direction if you don't have to.
Many boulevards and roads through Waikiki will transform into boundaries of a city within a city during the second week of November.
"That kind of really sucks, I work down here and my boyfriend picks me up and we come home, so how do we come home if it's going to be closed," says Tammy Wong, lives near convention center.
Homes, apartments and businesses in direct proximity of the blocks surrounding the convention center can expect road closures.
Outside the immediate circle, no-parking restrictions line some back streets as those roads become alternative bus routes.
"We do ask people to plan ahead, to be aware of what the situation is, and when it is appropriate it might be a very good idea not to be in the areas that are going to be affected," says Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle.
"Anything outside that location, outside the security zone, will be areas that the protestors and demonstrators are welcome to visit," says Major Clayton Kau of the Honolulu Police Department.
The closures are sorted into weekday and weekend phases, with the most intense security coming on the weekend of the leaders meeting when the president and other heads of state are in town and on the move.
"There will actually be closures when what we term the "three highs" move -- that will be Russia, the United States and China. The other economic leaders are expected to obey all traffic laws and also move with the traffic," says Major Kau.
The Hale Koa hosts the top leaders Saturday November 12th.
Fort Derussy Park and beach will be closed.
The Hilton Hawaiian village, Modern Honolulu and Ilikai marina condos must be accessed from the road behind Hawaii Prince.
The post office and Army Museum will close, and the gas station near the entrance to Waikiki will close except for Luana Waikiki residents.
"It's going to take longer for us, longer for passengers to get to their hotels and they might have to walk more," says Jeremiah Tachibana, Reliable shuttle.
Then there's the morning of Sunday, November 13th when all the leaders get on the H-1 Freeway to head to Ko Olina.
"Let's say you don't want to be anywhere on the road when we're heading out to Ihilani Resort, which I think most people have said that's the greatest opportunity for ‘carmageddon’ on that particular date," says Mayor Carlisle.
