The ocean around Maui proved it's power this week as a Maui surfer escaped with "only" 100 stitches after a 14-foot tiger shark chomped down on him on Monday. That was after two weekend incidents in which a 50-foot speed boat sank and a 45 foot sail boat ran aground. But the ocean was also the chicken-skin scene of an amazing event accomplished by a group of breast cancer survivors. We've got all those stories for you this week on Maui TV News.
And we've also got the story of the proposed ban on hand-held devices while driving. Maui county councilmember Joe Pontanilla told what is at the core of the issue,
Pontilla: "Public safety is a big issue for me. I look at all the 'what ifs.' what if i was taking my grandchildren to a function or what if a mom or dad was taking their children to school and something happened."
Pontanilla says the bill could move quickly enough through the council to have a ban in place on maui by the first of the year.
And two small Maui communities are still in shock after violence there. On Sunday in Kaupo in remote East Maui, 45 year-old Alan Vegas was killed by a single gunshot. Police have no suspects yet. Then, on Monday night in Makawao in upcountry Maui, a couple was found shot to death after what police say was a murder-suicide.
We've got the details on these stories plus ongoing updates of breaking news, special reports and extended coverage of many of our stories.
That's it for this week's report. have a great weekend.
