Classes will not be held in the University of Hawaii's historic Gartley hall for a while.
The 88-year-old building is being cleared and closed after major structural damage was discovered , raising questions about the safety of the hall.
"This is a constant problem on this side of campus where we have underground streams and water and an aquifer that is flowing across the basalt lava flow here into the quarry," said David Hafner, Assistant Vice Chancellor of facilities.
Efforts were underway to prepare Gartley hall for renovation, but the project needs to be evaluated as to whether the renovation can address the safety problems.
Gartley Hall is home to the school's psychology department.
