Research has shown that there are twice as many overweight keiki in Hawaii compared to children on the mainland.

Today, the city launched its "Let's Move, Honolulu" campaign, which is part of the First Lady Michelle Obama's national effort to combat childhood obesity.

Chef Roy Yamaguchi and Wahine basketball coach Dana Takahara-Diaz are heading up the local initiative.

"We can really teach these young kids that are in school the values of great and good nutrition along with the values of bringing fresh food to our schools," said Roy Yamaguchi, chef and co-chair.

"It is now a great opportunity and time to impress on our young people there is fun there is opportunities and there is so much to be gained by participating in sports," said Dana Takahara-Diaz, Wahine basketball coach and co-chair.

The city also plans to help parents make healthy choices for their families and to provide access to healthy and affordable food.
