Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann was the guest of honor at a fundraising event Wednesday night in Pittsburgh, an event organized by a major rail consultant.

The campaign stop for Hannemann's gubernatorial bid came in the middle of a city trip to Washington, D.C. to discuss rail.

According to Hannemann's office, Hannemann was to meet with the Chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure on Wednesday, June 9, in Washington, D.C.

Hannemann even sent a message on Twitter about his meeting with Rep. James Oberstar. But Oberstar's office told KHON2 News the meeting was scheduled for Thursday, June 10.

"I do know that the schedule was changed that he was moving with Oberstar today. I'm not sure if he met with anybody yesterday in Washington," said Dean Okimoto, Hannemann Committee 2010 Chair.

What we do know is Hannemann was in Pittsburgh Wednesday attending an event hosted by current and former NFL stars including Hall-of-Famer Franco Harris.

"I'm concerned with the co-mingling and that's what I would describe it as mixing a campaign with city business," said Carroll Cox with Envirowatch.

Officials from the Hannemann Committee 2010 say the trip to Pittsburgh was not paid for by the city.

"From D.C. to Pittsburgh and back to D.C. was funded by the campaign, Hannemann 2010," said Okimoto.

A receipt dated May 3rd supports that.

Sponsorship levels at the event ranged from $500 to $5,000.

"It was put together by some supporters in Pittsburgh so yeah we weren't totally aware of it either," said Okimoto.

The Pittsburgh event was also organized by Paul Overby.

Overby is a leading transit consultant and the former spokesperson and top official with Bombardier, a contender to supply the trains for Honolulu's $5.3 billion rail transit project.

"We didn't know that, we haven't tracked it that far yet," said Okimoto.

"When people outside of Hawaii are doing these things, you know, sometimes these things fall through the cracks," said Okimoto.

Hannemann is now in Oklahoma City for the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Both gubernatorial candidates Neil Abercrombie and Duke Aiona declined to comment on our report.

City response

Honolulu mayor Mufi Hannemann’s spokesman said the mayor has been working on city business throughout this trip, and that the side journey to Pittsburgh was paid by campaign funds, and on the mayor's personal time.

"Everything the mayor does is above board,” said the mayor’s spokesman Bill Brennan.  “He makes it a point with all of us who work for him to keep city business separate from campaign business. That’s why on itinerary I had for him it showed his D.C. meeting and Oklahoma trip, but the Pittsburgh part which is campaign related was not on my itinerary and it shouldn't be."

Brennan says the confusion over the meeting with Representative Oberstar stemmed from a mistake on the mayor's schedule put out by the city.

That meeting actually happened on Thursday. The Mayor also met with Senator Dan Inouye and Representative Mazie Hirono to discuss rail issues.

Mufi sold us out. He's making out on steel on steel in soome way be it monetary, political or nepotism based on tribal affiliations. Pittsburgh? Stwewelers? More like Stealersa. What did Mufi do as Mayor? He said make Waikiki wireless(NOT) Pro Bowl paade in Waikiki (NOT) No pro bowl Muffy, you be Grand Marshall next pro bowl parade? and Promote the honolulu zoo? (NOT) Honoplulu zoo ranked 60th in the nation...(hmmm..50 states right, so what's with the steeler?) Name the steelers from Hawaii, Notre Dame and Penn State... Hannemann is not telling it all...a vote for him is a vote for inflation, recession and corruption) If Obama can't say his name right, something is wrong..very wrong...Someone connected to Muffy will benefit fronm the rail at the expense of the public such that we will remain in the 21st century for generartions to come.

Mufi's stripes are finally coming out, he has no INTEGRITY, he is being BOUGHT by these major rail companies, and he is Mis-using the office of the Mayor to run a campaign for Governer. I hope he gets pounded and pounded on this story because he deserves it. Wonder why Aiona and Abercrombie decided not to comment..THEY DIDNT HAVE TO! Mufi stepped on his D&*K and now he is going to sufffer the reprocussions. Good For Him.

Do you all know that Mufi is over 50% share holder of a company that will be involed in the rail project. Know body sees this because the company is not based here. He stands to make a ungodly amount of money when this project starts. This is the only reason he wants it!! Where all just a bunch of suckers who dont see what really goes on behind close doors!! Hawaii is soooo corrupt and so is Mufi!

I hope that the voters will finally see who profits from this rail. It's not going to be the people of Honolulu, but all these mainland companies that heavily support Mufi. He's being bought and Hawaii taxpayers will foot this giant bill. On top of all the billions that get funneled out of the state, it will relieve traffic woes very little. The reason Mufi wants to be governor is so he can sign off on his flawed (BS) EIS.

If one were to walk in Mufi's shoes, one would have serious case of pronation. Just look at his heels.

MoonBeam, did you not read this story before writing all of that out? The guy's a crook, same as the rest of them! When are people going to take the blinders off and see what's happening to our State and Country? The majority of american people are like sheep, ignorant and following... I'll serve you Saimin Mike, does that mean you'll vote for me?

Friday, June 11, 2010 Aloha! This goes to show everyone that Mayor Mufi is a bizconservative. We need more enterprises participating in the government decision making process. Mufi is a solid performer as an elected official. He's innovative, fiscally responsible, and an able chief executive officer. He's a friend of the business community. We need more politicians who can understand the needs of our archipelago's enterprises. Sad to say it, but I think Mufi would make a better U.S. Senator representing Hawaii in Congress. It's unfortunate that a talented man like him has been telling the people that he wants to be Hawaii governor. With both of our Hawaii U.S. Senators about 85 or 86 years old, we need fresh blood in Congress. We need able leadership installed in the country's most exclusive club, while Mufi is still young. We need for Mufi to develop solid seniority for Hawaii in Congress. Mufi Hannemann graduated from Iolani School the same year I grad from McKinley HS. I had heard about him even then. I didn't think much of him during those days. But I've come to respect his performance & tenacity over many years of public service to Hawaii. Bob Watada recommended Mufi as a candidate for Congress in 1986. I held signs on a street corner once for him. He even personally served me with saimin at the State Dems convention in Waikiki in his hospitality room. I left the Dems many years ago. That was another era in Hawaii's politics. Mufi should reconsider running for U.S. Senator. We need him in Congress for Hawaii's best interests. Aloha. Mike Chun

Just more "FREE RIDES & Money" for Mufi, his rail, friends that have a money investment in the rail, and gubernatorial war chest "So called donations" all paid expense trip provided for by us Honolulu tax payers. What a crook this mayor turned out to be by swaggering PR moves. Mufi should at the very least show whatever integrity he has for the office of mayor. He makes me sick too. KHON I too give you a "Tip of my hat with a smile & nod". Thank You for your report Ron Mizutani and don't worry because you and KHON are untouchable to the C&C of Honolulu corruption. On a separate reporter note it is good to see that Tami Mori is doing well at DOT but I cannot say the same for Bill "DUI / Mufi's String-Puppet" Brennan. Aloha to all KHON....H&H

You deserve an award for this. HawaiiNewsNow will never report this about the Mayor. This is wrong and blatant misuse of taxpayers money. Bill Brennan is disingenuous to say that he's on his own time. I'm quite sure they introduced him as the Mayor of Honolulu. This people are fund raising for Mufi because they hope to reap more billions when he becomes governor. SICK! SICK! Blatant Corruption to the max.
